SHARPE- Seismic Hazard - Probabilistic Assessment at long Return Periods - Exploratory project

The present scientific proposal aims at developing a holistic assessment PSHA at long return periods, and the evaluation of associated epistemic uncertainties. This goal is to be achieved by incorporating testing and evaluation of the consistency of the different parts that are integrated into the PSHA calculation.

NanoClean - Remediation of soils contaminated with pharmaceutical products using “green” zero valent iron nanoparticles

During the last decades a significant growth in both production and consumption of pharmaceutical products has been observed. This is because health services cover a higher number of users due to health policies, population growth, and scientific development, especially in medicinal and pharmaceutical sciences. In livestock an increased use of animal drugs has also been verified.

ISIS - Remediation Technologies for the Cleanup of Soils Contaminated with Biofuels

First and second generation biofuels include biohydrogen, biodimethyl ether, bioethanol, biodiesel, biobutanol, dimethylfuran (DMF), etc. The use of waste materials to produce these biofuels is preferred so as not compete with food sources, recycles wastes, and reduces costs. In the case of biodiesel, the type of source material (example, poultry fat versus sunflower oil) can produce different
characteristics of the fuel.

Plano de amostragem para caracterização das cinzas duma antiga Central Termoelétrica

This project aimed the interpretation of the information provided by REN for the definition of a conceptual site environmental model and the definition of a sampling plan using drilling that was accomplished in the landfill in order to obtain additional information. In addition, the information produced allowed the validation of the conceptual model and increased the sound knowledge about the environmental impact of the former ashes landfill.

GRAFFISTONE-Alliance between Science and Stone-Built Cultural Heritage: Optimization of graffiti cleaning technologies

Graffiti resulting from acts of vandalism is a constant threat to heritage, jeopardizing the preservation of this historical-cultural-artistic legacy for future generations. Globally large amounts of money are invested in their removal without being able to achieve, in most cases, complete removal. The European Commission has invested in policies and funding of new cleaning procedures and anti-graffiti coatings, however, in many cases, graffiti is applied to surfaces without anti-graffiti and is only cleaned after long exposure to agents and air pollutants.

New applications for composites of polyurethane and recycled rubber

Rubber from end-of-life tires is being used to develop composite foams with interesting properties for some applications. After grinding, the rubber obtained from the tires can be incorporated in the polyurethane foams. This project is funded by Valorpneu.

The objectives of the project are:
*    Development of foam formulations with recycled rubber.
 *   Testing and characterization of the composite foams
  *  Development of applications with composite foams

Nanoporous materials as multiple therapeutic agents

Although nitric oxide (NO) is very toxic in low concentrations it plays a key role in the regulation of several biological systems of the human body. Solid carriers have potential biomedical interest in the delivery of exogenous NO for anti-bacterial, anti-thrombic and wound healing applications. In this research line, we prepare and modify nanoporous materials with the main goal of studying its potential in the field of storage and release of nitric oxide for therapeutic applications.
