IST student team wins 3 prizes at the SEG EVOLVE 2018 program

A team of students from the IST Petroleum Engineering PhD and MSc courses, participating under the name POSOIL, won 3 awards in the 2018 edition of the SEG EVOLVE 2018 international program, sponsored by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, Halliburton and IHRDC.

The team, supervised by Prof. Leonardo Azevedo and composed of PhD students, Eduardo Barrela, João Narciso, Catarina Marques, and MSc students, André Pinto, Arthur Santos, Francesco Turco and Inês Calçôa, were one of the 10 teams, out of 48 teams worldwide, selected to participate in the edition of the SEG/EVOLVE 2018 program.

For 8 months, the selected teams were put to the test in a multi-disciplinary challenge that simulated the dynamics of a small hydrocarbon exploration and production company. The program aimed at the development of a sub-surface data integration project, using real seismic data, wireline logs, production data, among others, for the characterization, economic feasibility study and presentation of a prospect for hydrocarbon exploration.

The final results were presented at the SEG Annual Meeting 2018 in Anaheim, California, with the IST team being the most awarded of the event, winning 3 team awards (in 6 possible), namely:

  • Best investment opportunity in the Dutch North Sea;
  • Best multidisciplinary approach;
  • Best integration of geology and tools.
