BiomembrOS - Biomimetic Membranes for Organ Support

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a severe lung condition characterised by rapid onset of inflammation in the lungs, causing fluid buildup and impaired oxygen uptake. Existing therapies like mechanical ventilation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) exhibit high risks. ECMO uses synthetic hollow fibre membranes to replace lung function but falls short with regard to efficiency and haemocompatibility.

UNPRECEDENTED - Unrevealing the mechanisms involved when producing biodiesel from waste oil using a combined experimental and theoretical methodology

A 40% reduction in emissions should be achieved by 2030 within the EU with the outstanding goal for Europe to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. These goals need to be reached without jeopardizing economic development and growth and simultaneously fulfilling the UN goals for sustainability. One of the main contributors to climate change and global warming is emissions from our vehicles as these mainly use petroleum-based fuels. To address this, new approaches, methodologies, and technologies must be developed.

RiceHUSK+ - Cementitious composites with rice husk for prefabricated solutions of multilayer panels and acoustic barriers

Cement is one of the most commonly used building materials due to its durability and highly functional properties after hardening. However, its production also has negative environmental impacts, such as the extraction of raw materials, energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Because the volume of concrete being produced every year continues to be very significant, several studies are being developed in an attempt to improve its sustainability by incorporating waste materials in substitution of aggregates, as well as by developing precast solutions.

Eco+RCEB - Eco-efficient recycled cement compressed earth blocks

A promising approach to earth building materials is the compressed stabilized earth blocks (CSEB), increasing the processing speed and improving mechanical strength and durability when stabilized with cementitious materials, such as ordinary Portland cement or hydraulic lime. Therefore, the main objective of this project is the innovative production and characterization of more eco-friendly CSEB by using low embody energy recycled cement from waste concrete as a more sustainable stabilizer.

RISBRIEFCASE - Briefcase RIS network creation PA 22022

FEUP will collaborate with RISBRIEFCASE project to develop strategies to promote the importance of mineral raw materials in everyday life. According to this, an educational board game will be created to promote the importance of raw materials among young students. The existing project tolls will be translated into Portuguese. Also, a workshop will be held at FEUP to disseminate project tools, train students and researchers and raise awareness of the general public about the importance of the raw materials industry.

REESOURCE - Unlocking the Supply of Rare Earth Elements in Europe through Responsible, Sustainable and Decarbonized Innovative Technologies

Responsible, sustainable and low CO2 footprint mineral extraction is vital for the preservation of our planet. Ensuring responsible supply of minerals involves addressing the environmental, social, and economic impacts of mineral extraction and developing technologies and know-how to minimize them.

SHELLTER - Reuse of Aquaculture Waste in the Development of Construction Materials

There is a growing understanding of sustainability and economic issues of products in the circular economy sector but few studies on the incorporation of waste or maritime by-products of mollusc aquaculture in construction materials. SHELLTER project - Reuse of aquaculture waste in the development of construction materials - will contribute to the creation of opportunities for the exploitation of oyster shell waste from aquaculture or from invasive species as an industrial product for companies that are committed to the sustainability of construction materials.

NGS – New Generation Storage

NGS is composed of complementary technological Work Packages (WP), with the capacity to autonomously generate Products, Processes, or Services (PPS) for the international market, incorporating innovative technologies that can increase the value over the life of the project. Individually, each WP can operate independently in a specific area of the value chain. However, together they interconnect and build a meaningful circular chain.  Cerena and CQE are involved in the work package 5- Recycling and 2nd life.
